Whether you’re renovating your kitchen, expanding your home, or remodeling your bathroom, preparing your home properly before work begins can make all the difference to your experience.
EBy taking a little time to plan ahead and prepare, you will avoid delays, unexpected events, and stress.
Why is it important to prepare your home before construction work begins?
Bringing a team of carpenters into your home means putting up with noise, dust, materials, and people coming and going, temporarily, of course. The more you anticipate the impact of the work on your daily life, the more you will enable the work to proceed efficiently and with respect for your privacy.
What should be done in practical terms?
1. Free up the spaces concerned
First and foremost, the team must be able to easily access the areas to be renovated. This means:
- Empty the affected rooms (or clear them as much as possible)
- Move furniture, appliances, or fragile items that could get in the way of workers.
- Remove frames, curtains, and light fixtures if necessary.
Tip: Set aside a room or temporary storage area to keep your belongings during the renovation work.
2. Ensure that your contractor protects what remains on site.
Even if you only touch one room, dust travels. To avoid unpleasant surprises, you should:
- Cover furniture with tarps or plastic
- Protect floors with construction mats or temporary panels.
3. Anticipate your daily routine
Some renovations can render a kitchen or bathroom unusable. It’s best to think about this beforehand:
- Do you have a backup plan for cooking or washing?
- Will you need to stay somewhere else temporarily?
- Do you have children or pets that need to be kept safe during the work
4. Communicate with the team
Good preparation also means good communication with your contractor:
- Share tour expectations ans constraints (noise, schedules, acces).
- Provide a key to grant acces if you are away ( a key box or unique garage code is often the preferred)
